Nursing NCLEX RN Review Video: Isolation Precautions

Precautions

Precautions on various illnesses and the different steps to adequately protect yourself from various illnesses are one of the highest yielding question categories on the NCLEX. It is a given that you will get at least one question on precautions on your NCLEX exam. That is why it is extremely important to remember the different types of precautions and remember which illnesses require different methods of protection.

  1. The 4 types personal protective equipment precaution types are:

    1. Standard
    2. Contact
    3. Droplet and
    4. Airborne

     

    Standard Precaution requires you to perform and wear:

    1. Hand Hygiene
    2. Gloves

     

    Contact Precaution requires you to perform and wear:

    1. Hand Hygiene
    2. Gloves
    3. Gown

     

    Droplet Precaution requires you to perform and wear:

    1. Hand Hygiene
    2. Gloves
    3. Mask

     

    Airborne Precautions requires you to perform and wear::

    1. Hand Hygiene
    2. Gloves
    3. N95 Mask

    Here is when to use standard precautions:

    • Every patient you encounter
    • Patients that require contact with any type of bodily fluid

     

    Here is when to use contact precautions:

    • Anyone who has a transmittable disease via contactable sources.
    • Resistant bacterias such as MRSA, VRE, C-Diff

     

    Here is when to use droplet precautions:

    • Anyone who has the ability of transmitting through small particles.
    • Meningitis, Pertussis, Influenza

     

    Here is when to use airborne precautions:

    • Transmitted through the air.
    • Measles, Tuberculosis, Varicella

    Now here are some tips that will help you remember this for NCLEX exam. For standard precautions use

    • “VCHIPS”
      • Varicella
      • Cutaneous diptheria
      • Herpes simplex
      • HIV
      • Hepatitis B and C
      • Impetigo
      • Pediculosis (lice)
      • Scabies
    • Secretions, Excretions and Bodily fluids
        

    For contact precautions use

    • “MRS. WEE”
      • Multidrug
      • Respiratory infection – RSV
      • Skin infections
      • Wound infections
      • Enteric infections (c. diff)
      • Eye infections (conjunctivitis – red eye)
    • Adenovirus, Diarrhea, Rotavirus, E. Coli, Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Herpes, RSV (if cough productive)

     

    For droplet precautions try to remember

    • “Spiderman” or “SSSPPIDERMMMA(N)”
      • Sepsis
      • Scarlet fever
      • Streptococcal Pharyngitis
      • Parvarovirus
      • Pneumonia
      • Influenza
      • Diptheria
      • Epiglottitis
      • Rubella
      • Mumps
      • Meningitis
      • Mycoplasma or Meningeal Pneumonia
      • Adenovirus
    • RSV

     

    For airborne try to remember

    • “My Chicken Has TB”
      • Measels
      • Chickenpox
      • Herpes Zoster
      • Tuberculosis
