CONS of Emergency Room Nursing (ER Nurse) in 2021 | Emergency Department RN

Emergency department is an extremely intense environment to work. You have patients in their most critical states and often have to deal with patients who are quite acute requiring a lot of attention. Now that I have worked in the emergency department for a few months, I thought I would share with you 3 things I have found I really dislike about emergency nursing.

  1. Continuity of care is absent.
    • We often get patients in their worst moments in their condition and send them to the appropriate floor without seeing them get better. This makes burnout high because you are constantly dealing with people who are in their worse state meaning they will most likely be not very pleasant. You’ll stabilize them for a short period of time and send them upstairs where they will become better and ultimately feel great again. That part of the process you do not see as much in the emergency department and it is definitely a part of floor nursing I miss.
  2. Going on transfers.
    • Due to being ACLS certified, there are situations where it is deemed necessary for patients to be transferred via a nurse. This is quite an unpleasant experience as the EHS ride almost undoubtedly has made me feel nauseous every time. It is so terrible to the fact that I never want to do transfers across the city. However if you are assigned to be the float nurse you have no choice but to go.
  3. Having to stay for work in acute situations.
    • When shift is about to change and there is ap patient that is actively deteriorating or if you are on a certain code team, it is really difficult to leave work. This means that you might have to stay for quite some time after work and you are stuck.

Let me know if you relate to any of these problems! Would love to hear what you have to say.
